All you need to know when you’re picking window treatments.

Window treatments serve the purpose of style and function in a room. But with every room having a different style and usage, it can get quite confusing. Here’s a simple list of do’s and don’ts by Kosaa Design experts to cover all your window treatment woes:

Do’s

DO: UNDERSTAND THE PURPOSE

Assess the needs of the room and windows within that space to pick the best window treatments. In the kitchen, minimal window treatments such as blinds or shades should be picked. These are safer options as there are no hanging materials around cooking appliances in the kitchen. For the bedroom, privacy and lighting may be the key considerations. People usually prefer lined curtains to ensure warmth and privacy during the night. For the living room where we spend most of our time, allowing natural light is preferred.  A combination of window treatments can be used in the living room. Sheer curtains can be used for light filtering and decorative purpose whereas blinds can be used to ensure privacy.

DO: KNOW THE LOOK YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE

Curtains and blinds are tremendously significant to any room transformation. They instantly create softness, add drama with bold patterns, or a burst of color.  Have a vision for each of the rooms in your home, before you start picking out window treatments for them.  For living rooms, you could go with a drapery panel for a flamboyant look or shutters for a contemporary neutral style.

DO: USE BLINDS WITH DRAPERY PANELS

Get the best of both worlds! Use blinds and drapery panels together in a space. Enjoy privacy and light control of functional blinds along with the stylish versatility of drapery panels.

DO:  SEEK INSPIRATION

Head to Pinterest, Google, or Instagram and do a bit of research to gather inspiration on home decor. Maybe you love the Scandinavian design or is mid-century modern designs more suited to your home? Gather some inspiration before you start shopping.

Don’t’s

DON’T: OPT FOR A DIFFERENT LOOK IN EVERY ROOM IN YOUR HOME

It is important to consider the atmosphere you are trying to create in your home through the different rooms and spaces. The color scheme of window treatments plays a major role to ensure the cohesiveness of a home.

DON’T: MAKE YOUR CURTAINS TOO SHORT

Curtains look best when they either float an inch or so above the floor, just touch the floor or puddle on the floor. The general rule of thumb when hanging curtains and blinds is “high and wide.” You want to make your windows feel as tall as possible, so you usually want to hang your curtain rod or blinds slightly above the window to create the effect of nice tall windows, even if they’re not. For the width when hanging curtains, you want to hang them wider than the frame, on both sides to make the window appear larger.
